Tulum
Tulum day trip

A ceremonial center of the ancient Maya, Tulums ruins stand atop limestone cliffs overlooking the Caribbean, comprising more than 60 buildings and three exterior walls. One of the most prominent archaeological site in Mexico, Tulum is thought to have been occupied in the Early Classic Period (250-600AD), but was not officially founded as a commercial trading port until around 1200. The city reached the height of its importance in the 1400s, and fell approximately 70 years after the Spanish conquest. Still standing today are these amazing remnants of Maya architecture and culture. Among the best-known structures are El Castillo, Temple of the Descending Gods, and Temple of the Frescos, distinguished by its highly detailed carved figures.

The entrance fee is $4USD daily, and free on Sundays. There is an additional cost of $4 to bring a video camera with you into the ruins.

Directions from Cancun

Public buses are available, and depart frequently from the regional bus station downtown on Av Tulum and Uxmal. In Tulum, buses arrive at the entrance to the Visitors Center. A shuttle runs roundtrip between the Visitors Center and the ruins for $2USD, or it is a 15- minute walk.

Bus tours can be purchased through travel agents, hotels and kiosks throughout Cancun. Most of the organized bus trips arrive at the ruins at about 10am, as do cruise boats that dock for the day, so you may want to arrive early and beat the crowds.
